The Athletic Situation At Guilford College By Charlie Strider For the past several years the athletic problem at Guilford has been a very serious one. Each year the team's morale seems to get lower and lower. This year things have come to a head. On Friday, January 20, the Board of Trustees met to consider various problems. At this time they were presented a plea from the students for subsidized ath letics at Guilford College. They received the statement with great interest and were very sincere in their desire to do somehing about this problem. A suggestion was made that a committee be ap pointed to draw up plans and present them to the board at its regular meeting in April. The committee is to be made up of three members from the Board of Trustees, three from the fac ulty, three from the alumni, and three students. It is my opinion that this committee will accom plish what the students want. The three students on the com mittee will be elected by popular Guilford College, Friday, February 10, 1956 vote of the complete student body during the Freshman and Upper class chapels within a week of the printing of this article. Nom inations will be allotted each sec come from each section. Two nom inations will be allotted each sec tion and three to the day hops. This will make a total of seven teen possible nominations that will be put on the actual ballot from which three will be picked. The nominated person does not have to reside in the section in which he is nominated. Therefore there is some possibility of repetition of several names. In that way he list will be cut down to a certain extent. This committee will perform a most important function and the people who rep resent the students should not be chosen without a great deal of consideration and thought. All in all, I think we are slowly beginning to attain what we, the students, are looking for. Since the trustees know that all the stu dents are interested, they will surely take action. New North Choraliers One evening in the fall of 1953, several boys gathered in a room in New North to sing spirituals and camp songs. This continued 'til spring with the group growing larger to include finally all the boys in the section. Then the group named themselves "The New North Choraliers" and chose Chester Baker as their conductor. Their activity centered mainly around serenading the girls at night after the dorms closed. Boys' May Day was also a place to show their talent. But they did not con fine their activity to campus. They sang at a neighboring Negro church, serenaded the girls at Women's College (at the girls' re quest) at the new Guilford dorm, and accompanied a Women's Col lege organization when they went Christmas caroling this year. These boys leel a tie of unity in their singing. They have, also, paraphrased songs and borrowed tunes for their own words. Ask any one of the boys, and he will say that this has been a unique experience in his college life. Jordan Sellars "Down Beats" To Furnish Music The Social Committee will spon sor its annual semi-formal Val entine Dance tomorrow night in the gym. The Jordan Sellars "Down Beats," a Negro orchestra from Burlington, N. C., will fur nish both slow and jazz music from 8:30 until 11:30 p.m. This is a no flower dance, and the admis sion is free. The gym will be decorated in traditional red and white with valentines and cupids. Betty Jane Beamon is chairman of the dec orations committee. During in termission the Social Committee will serve refreshments; Tommy Younts is in charge of refresh ments. This is the second semi-formal dance given this year by the Social Committee; the other was the Freshman Dance and Reception during the first week of school. Under the leadership of its chair man, Ann Rae Thomas, the group has also sponsored several sock hops, the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance, and free movies on week ends. The Social Committee has more movies ordered which will be shown throughout the remain der of the school year. It is also considering having a Leap Year Dance later in the spring.
